Flattening the boxes is required to ensure all available space is used.
Corrugated cardboard can be recycled for free at any of the Brockton landfill sites and at the Walkerton Recycling Depot.
Electronic Waste can be recycled for free at the Brant landfill site and at the Walkerton Recycling Depot.
Film plastics make up a large portion of household waste and recycling them closes the loop allowing for consumer packaging that can be remanufactured into new materials.
All plastic must be cleaned of food residue, with any stickers, paper and receipts removed. It is recommended to fill a recyclable bag with the film plastics to prevent loose material.
Film Plastics can be recycled for free at any of the Brockton landfill sites and at the Walkerton Recycling Depot.

Blue Box Transition
Starting on January 1, 2026, the Municipality of Brockton will not be responsible for the blue box program, with the responsibility shifting to the producers. The representative of the producers, Circular Materials of Ontario, will be providing the service, but not to the same standard as has been provided in the past. Only Eligible Sources will be picked up, meaning that Ineligible Sources will need to set up their own recycling services.
Ontario municipalities will transition to a producer-led Blue Box program under the province’s new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model. This means producers of recyclable materials will fully fund and operate the program.
What’s Changing?
Until December 31, 2025: No changes to collection schedules or accepted materials.
Starting January 1, 2026: Blue box collection will be collected by a contractor managed by Circular Materials, a non-profit representing producers.
Collection schedules and accepted items are subject to change on January 1, 2026. Municipal staff will continue to update this page when new information is provided.
Your collection schedule and the materials you can recycle will remain unchanged until December 31, 2025. No. There is no additional charge to residents to transition to the new blue box collection program on January 1, 2026.
What happens as of January 1, 2026?
The Municipality of Brockton will no longer collect blue box recycling as of January 1, 2026. For more information, visit Circular Materials’ webpage on advancing the circular economy.
The Government of Ontario introduced legislation that transforms the management and collection of Blue Box materials in the province. The Blue Box Regulation, enacted under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, is a cornerstone of Ontario’s Strategy for a Waste Free Ontario: Building the Circular Economy.
This regulation shifts the current cost-sharing model, which divides expenses between municipal taxpayers and producers of Blue Box materials, to a new system where producers are fully responsible for funding, operating, and meeting performance targets for the recycling program. Producers will be accountable for collecting and recycling Blue Box materials, reporting to the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA), and achieving progressively higher recycling targets.
By placing the full financial, operational, and performance responsibility on producers, this new approach creates a direct incentive to minimize waste and enhance recycling efforts, leading to reduced natural resource extraction, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
What are producers of recycable materials?
Producers are companies that supply materials for the blue box program, including packaging, paper products, and packaging-like items made from paper, glass, metal, or plastic. These companies, who design, manufacture, and market products and packaging, are responsible for managing and funding the entire lifecycle of their products and packaging.
For more details, visit Circular Materials’ webpage on promoting the circular economy.
Does this affect industrial, commercial and institutional properties?
Yes. Industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) waste is regulated separately from residential waste in Ontario, and is not eligible for collection by Circular Materials as per the Province of Ontario’s Blue Box Regulation.
The Municipality is reviewing collection opportunities to IC&I properties and more information will be provided at a later date.
Are the accepted items changing?
Until December 31, 2025, there are no expected changes to the accepted items list. After January 1, 2026, Circular Materials may update the types of materials accepted in the new blue box program, though these changes are still to be confirmed.
Who do I direct my recycling questions to?
Until December 31, 2025, all recycling questions can be directed to the Municipality.
After January 1, 2026, all recycling questions are to be directed to Circular Materials and the designated collection company.
