Brockton's history and heritage dates back more than 150 years, when the Townships of Brant and Greenock were incorporated in 1856; the Town of Walkerton was later incorporated in 1871. The Municipality of Brockton was incorporated in 1999 when the former Townships of Brant and Greenock and the Town of Walkerton were amalgamated. The name Brockton was chosen as a combination of these names.

Archives |
The Brockton Heritage Committee's archive collection is stored at the Greenock Works Shop. The Brockton Heritage Committee also has a digital archive on the website, Vita Collections, including a listing of culturally and architecturally significant sites in Brockton, a collection of archival and photographic resources, and genealogical resources. Contact the Brockton Heritage Committee for additional information on local archives in Brockton. The Bruce County Public Library (Walkerton Branch) opened an archives room in 1999 including local books, microfilm, newspapers and pictures. The majority of the Library's former archive collection has been combined with the Brockton Heritage Committee's archive collection at the Greenock Works Shop. The Walkerton Library has a microfilm reader (view scan) computer, which has been relocated to the basement of the library. To ensure availability, please book your visit through the Walkerton Library. There is no fee to use the microfilm reader, but a fee may apply for photocopies. Users can also send copies of viewed items to their personal email through the microfilm reader's computer at no charge. The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton also houses historical artifacts and documentation from Bruce County. Brockton Heritage Committee Donation Policy and Brochure |
The Brockton Heritage Committee has a Brockton Heritage Committee Donation Policy outlining the process for accepting donations of historical importance to the Municipality of Brockton, or former Townships of Brant and Greenock, and the former Town of Walkerton. If you are interested in donating a historic artifact to the Brockton Heritage Committee please review the policy. The policy defines the type of donations(s) that will be accepted by the Heritage Committee, the procedure for accepting and storing the donation(s), the procedure for returning or disposing of the unaccepted donation(s), and the Transfer of Ownership Agreement attached as Appendix A to the policy. The Brockton Heritage Committee also has a Donation Brochure inviting residents to donate their historical donations to the Committee in accordance with the Brockton Heritage Committee Donation Policy. |
