Turn Your Key : Be Idle Free
Brockton has an Anti-Idling By-law to protect air quality and human health. Idling for more than three (3) minutes could mean a penalty of up to $2,000.
Please turn off your motor vehicle if it is going to be left idling for more than 3 minutes.
If you're going to be stopped for more than 60 seconds – except in traffic – turn the engine off. Unnecessary idling wastes money and fuel, produces greenhouse gases and affects our air quailty.
Eco Transportation Tips
Each litre of gasoline that is used produces about 2.3 kg of CO2. Therefore, every time you start your engine, you're making an impact. Consider alternatives to driving everywhere and find ways to lower your impact when you travel on trips and vacation.
Visit the Ministry of the Environment website for a complete list of eco transportation tips.
Driving
- Use the car less. Commit to 10 percent less and try to reduce car use as much as possible. You'll save money, fight global warming and keep our air cleaner and healthier.
- Car pool. If you must use the car, try to fill each seat. Every extra car seat filled is one less car on the road.
- Buy the most fuel-efficient car possible. Do you really need an SUV? Fuel saved is money saved.
- Maintain your car properly. Change the oil, get regular check-ups, replace or repair worn parts. A better maintained vehicle is more efficient, and therefore cleaner. (For more details on how much you save and things to consider when buying a more fuel efficient car, check out the ecoDriver website.)
- Don't idle. Idling gets you nowhere. Save fuel and emissions and turn your vehicle off.
- Reduce your car's weight to improve efficiency. Remove the roof rack and don't carry things around in the trunk that you don't need.
- Use accessories less, like air conditioning, seat warmers, fog lights, etc. These drain power and reduce fuel efficiency, so turn them off when you don't need them.
- Drive the speed limit. The faster you drive the more fuel is required to go the same distance. 90 km/hr is the most fuel-efficient speed.
- Maintain your tires. Correct tire pressure will maximize your efficiency. And remember to remove your snow tires at the end of winter.
- Drive "gently". Don't accelerate rapidly and then brake hard-you're wearing out your breaks and increasing your fuel consumption.
- Use a block heater in the winter. You'll reduce the time it takes to warm up your car, and reduce your fuel usage.
- Combine trips. Need to visit two destinations that aren't far apart? Do it on the same trip.
Travel & Vacation
- Explore Ontario close to home! We have a beautiful province with many attractions. The side bonus is you'll also boost our economy. Explore the Bruce!
-
Take transit. Trains are a more fuel efficient and more comfortable way to travel. Local bus service will get you to Pearson Airport and beyond.
- Fly economy. The more people on a plane, the fewer planes, the cleaner the air.
- Fly direct. Less time spent in the air means fewer emissions.
- Pack light. Less weight means less fuel is burned.
