As of June 2019, through a partnership with Canadian Plastics Industry Association and Bruce Power, the Municipality of Brockton is now able to collect polystyrene once again for recycling and to process it for efficient shipping to end markets using polystyrene densification technology. At full operation this will increase recycling diversion of polystyrene by up to 90% and reduce demand on landfill space.
Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic made from the styrene monomer. Because it is 95 percent air, it is often used as protective packaging for electronics and appliances.
