Councillor Vacancy
On June 14, 2024, James Lang resigned from his position as Deputy Mayor for the Council of the Municipality of Brockton. On June 18, 2024, the Council of the Municipality of Brockton declared a seat on the Council of the Municipality of Brockton to be vacant. The Council of the Municipality of Brockton chose to accept applications from existing members of Council to replace the vacant Deputy Mayor seat in accordance with Section 262 of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25. Council appointed the new Deputy Mayor at the July 9, 2024 Council Meeting. Councillor Kym Hutcheon was appointed as the new Deputy Mayor and swore an Oath of Office and was formally appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor by By-Law. As the new Deputy Mayor was appointed from an existing member of Councillor, Council declared a vacancy for the position of Councillor at the August 13, 2024 Council Meeting.
The Municipality of Brockton was accepting applications to replace the vacant seat in accordance with Section 262 of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25. Applications were open from 8:30 a.m. on August 15, 2024 until 2:00 p.m. on September 16, 2024.

Interested individuals had to complete and submit the following documentation in person to the Clerk at the Municipal Office, located at 100 Scott Street, Walkerton in order to be considered for this vacancy - Emailed or faxed copies of these documents were not accepted:
- Council Vacancy Application Form (Nomination Form)/Declaration of Qualification
- Freedom of Information (FOI) Release Form
- Personal statement of qualification for consideration of Council. (Personal statements had to be typewritten on letter size (8 ½” x 11”) paper, shall not exceed two (2) pages (one-sided only) in length, and will include the Candidate(s) name and address. Statements that did not meet these requirements would not be included in any Council Meeting agenda, or be provided to Council by the Clerk)
Nominations were accepted by the Clerk’s Office during regular business hours (Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2024 until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 16, 2024.
A candidate was able to withdraw their nomination by filing a written withdrawal in-person with the Clerk’s Office by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
The List of Candidates was Certified by the Clerk on Thursday, September 19, 2024 at 3:30 p.m.

Special Council Meeting to Appoint New Councillor
There will be an opportunity for candidates to present to Brockton Council at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bruce County Council Chambers (30 Park Street, Walkerton). The Agenda for the meeting has been posted on our Current Council Meeting Agenda page.
At this Special Council Meeting, Council will vote on the appointment of the new Councillor. The appointed Councillor will then swear their Oath of Office and be formally appointed to the position of Councillor by By-Law.
Deputy Mayor Vacancy

Three applications were received for the position of Deputy Mayor. On July 9, 2024 the Council of the Municipality of Brockton considered the three applications from candidates, who were also given a chance to speak to Council on their interest in filling this vacant position. Council further voted on their appointment for Deputy Mayor, and Councillor Kym Hutcheon was appointed as the new Deputy Mayor. Deputy Mayor Hutcheon swore an Oath of Office and was formally appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor by By-Law.

Interested individuals were required to complete a Deputy Mayor Council Vacancy Application Fillable Form (Nomination Form) and submit the form in person to the Clerk at the Municipal Office located at 100 Scott Street, Walkerton. Emailed or faxed copies of this application form were not accepted. Nominations were accepted by the Clerk’s Office during regular business hours commencing at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024. A candidate was able to withdraw their nomination by filing a written withdrawal in-person with the Clerk’s Office by 2:00 p.m. of Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The list of candidates was certified by the Clerk on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
