Brockton Composting Survey

Over the summer in 2015 the Municipality of Brockton and the Environmental Advisory Committee encouraged residents to fill out an online Composting Survey to find out how Brockton residents are dealing with food waste and organic matter.

Thank you to those who took the time to complete the survey.

Why a Survey about Composting in Brockton?

The Municipality of Brockton and the Environmental Advisory Committee are aiming to reduce the amount of waste brought to our local landfills, and are considering a community composting program. Household organics make up a large part of our curbside waste, an estimated 40% by weight!

Brockton is a leader in waste diversion and recycling programs. In addition to blue box recycling pick up, the municipality currently operates a re-use trailer at the Hanover-Walkerton landfill for re-usable items, and offers e-waste, film plastic, battery, mattress, Styrofoam, binder and scrap metal recycling programs.

A community composting program would help us to reuse organic waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, garden waste and more; to improve soil and reduce our impact on the environment, making Brockton a healthier place to live and work.

These are some of the expected benefits of a community composting program:

  • Reduce Landfill Expenses: our current landfill expenses are increasing. Bag tags and household waste management fees do not cover the growing cost of landfilling Brockton`s waste.
  • Reduce Landfill Leachate and Landfill Gas: when organic matter is buried in our landfills it produces landfill gas and leachate. Landfill gas traps more heat in our atmosphere than carbon  dioxide. Leachate is often contaminated with other toxic materials and can contaminate our groundwater. Collecting, testing and treating leachate is expensive.
  • Reduce Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions: When we send lass waste to the landfill we use fewer trucks, less fuel, and our landfills will last longer and reduce GHG emissions.

We want to know how we can make a Community Composting Program a success. Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.

Brockton Compost Survey Results - October 14, 2015

Through this survey, the Environmental Advisory Committee has determined that there is enough support in the community to proceed with a compost pilot project.  The Environmental Advisory Committee's Compost Sub-Committee will work to determine the details and updates will be posted on this page, via news items and social media.

If you would like to participate with us as we move ahead to create more composting options in Brockton, or have any questions about this initiative please contact Brandy Patterson, Sustainability Coordinator.
