Beginning January 1, 2015, a new regulation in Ontario (Smoke-Free Ontario Act's Ontario Regulation 48/06) has been put in place to prevent young people from smoking. This act will also help to reduce tobacco exposure in our daily lives.
Smoking is now prohibited during all seasons at all outdoor playgrounds and public areas within 20 metres of any point at the playground perimeter. Smoking is also prohibited at municipal sporting areas, including spectator areas within 20 metres of any point of the area perimeter.
Signage promoting the prohibition of smoking is made available by the Grey Bruce Health Unit, and required by the Ministry to be placed in playgrounds and sporting areas.
Frequently Asked Questions and Fact Sheets are available on the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care website or by visiting the Grey Bruce Health Unit website, or calling 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456.
