Rain Barrels

Collect hundreds of litres of free rainwater every year, conserving and reducing demand for our municipally treated water.

Harvested rain water can be used to:

  • water your garden
  • irrigate your lawn
  • wash cars and windows
  • hose down the driveway

Drain Before Next Rain

The buildings, streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and densely compacted lawns in built-up areas prevent water from infiltrating the soil. When rain hits these hard surfaces it runs off to the nearest water body via the storm sewer. On its way it picks up animal waste, leaves, cigarette butts, chemicals, fuels, heavy metals, and litter. These contaminants get deposited straight into lakes and rivers, making them hazardous for swimming and aquatic life. During heavy rains storm sewer grills can get clogged with debris and whole streets can fill up like swimming pools.

Rain barrels help to slow down the volume of rain water running into our storm sewers. Even if you don't have plants to water, make it a habit with your rain barrel to Drain Before Next Rain.  Draining barrels before the next rain gives the ground the chance to absorb water more slowly and helps to keep contaminates out of our streams and rivers.
