A fire escape plan that you and your family understand and have practiced, could be the difference between life and death. Studies have shown that you and your family could have only seconds to escape your home in the case of a real fire emergency so develop your home fire escape plan today using the tips below.

  1. Know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.  Sit down with everyone in your household and discuss how each person will get out of the home in a fire.
  2. Practice your escape plan with everyone in your home to ensure that everyone can get out quickly.
  3. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room, if possible.
  4. Get low and go under the smoke to the nearest safe exit. Most fire deaths are the result of smoke inhalation.
  5. Get out and Stay out. Never re-enter a burning building. Once you have escaped safely call the fire department from a cell phone or a neighbour’s house.
  6. Choose a meeting place outside, a safe distance from your home. In case of fire, everyone should go directly to the meeting place to be accounted for.
